The origins of the company began in the 1970s and 80s, with many of the York-based family working in construction. 1989 saw the founding of P&T Contracts, initially operating out of the family’s kitchen and garage at their home. As the company grew, there was the need for more space to store plant and materials, which led to the company using a storage yard on Bull Lane in York.

In 2001 the business brought everything under one roof by purchasing a haulage yard along Hull Road as their new and permanent premises. Work quickly began on clearing the site, installing services, and laying the foundations for a successful business.

It was in the same year P&T achieved ISO 9001 (Quality), their first of many accreditations to be gained throughout the following decade. This set in motion a period of development and progression, raising the standard of quality and safety for the company.

During the 2010s P&T built closer ties with the rail industry, working firstly with the RSSB Standards, to then becoming a RISQS approved contractor in 2018. This also led to investing in new rail specific plant and equipment, in order to satisfy the growing demands from clients.

In the 35 years that P&T has now been operating, our biggest investment is in our workforce. Whether that’s training local people, offering apprenticeships, improving skills, or working with accredited partners.

True to our roots, we remain a family run business, with 2 generations paving the way for P&T Contracts long into the future.

In recognition of this, we have achieved ISO 9001 (quality), ISO 14001 (environmental), ISO45001 (occupational health & safety) accreditations.

A crucial part of our Health and Safety Management System is the training, development, and engagement of employees with relevant health and safety information. We invest in comprehensive training programmes, to ensure that workers are competent to perform their tasks, aware of potential hazards, and equipped to handle emergencies.

The ongoing review and monitoring of key performance indicators (KPIs) is an important part of how the business makes continuous improvements, in order to maintain a safe and compliant work environment. Staying informed about changes in regulations, industry standards, and emerging best practices, also guarantees that our Health and Safety Management System remains up-to-date and effective.
